July 8 - 11: London Sunfest 2010

If that picture to the left doesn't make you want to check out this highlight-of-the-summer in downtown London, Ontario-- I don't know what will! Maybe...
- hundreds of food vendors selling everything from funnel cakes to Roti, Paella, and wontons
- thousands of handmade, 100% original pieces of arts, crafts, preserves, and representing some of London and area's most talented and unique craftsmen
- over 35 national and international music and dance headliners from around the world

This is London, Ontario's annual TD Canada Trust Sunfest!! This year it is happening July 8th to 11th right downtown in Victoria Park. Entrance is absolutely FREE (food and crafts cost money, obviously), but the music/dance performances happen on the big outdoor stage, and they are all free (and AMAZING!!)

This is the highlight of every summer in London, and surely not a festival to miss!! Check out the website for more details and updates here: http://www.sunfest.on.ca/

March 30 - April 2 -- Jupiter en Famille (a FRENCH play!!!)

Hey everyone, this play is put on by the French department and is TOTALLY IN FRENCH. How exciting... (time to recall all those French Immersion skills!!)

A description of the play:

The gods really are crazy - or maybe they just have spring fever! Imagine Desperate Housewives meets Ovid’s Metamorphosis – a rollicking bedroom comedy where the Roman gods confront infidelity, sibling rivalry, homosexuality, and yoga. All in French - because even the gods know that French is the language of love. Jupiter is forever chasing pretty girls while Juno just wants to take a vacation. Will Orpheus sign a recording deal with Venus? Will Minerva’s vow of chastity stand up to the charms of an Indian god? Come find out at the world premier of a play written, directed and scored by local talent.

Show Times:
March 30, 31 7:30 pm
April 1st 7:30 pm
April 2nd 10:30 am

$15 Adults

DYK: FREE concerts on campus, who knew?

Hey everyone,

THE BEATLES ARE COMING TO PLAY A FREE CONCERT AT WESTERN!!!!!!

... just kidding, they're mostly not alive, BUT I just got this great tip from Josh (and it's almost as good)...

Apparently the faculty of music has an online events calendar where they post ALL of their events... so if you enjoy music at all--it's the place to be. Some of the city's (maybe even country? dare I say, world?'s) most talented musicians put on daily performances RIGHT ON CAMPUS. Check it out between class... after class... it's awesome! And apparently the last month of the academic year is their busiest time.

So, here's the DL:

Choose from 3+ recitals daily, free and conveniently on campus during your lunch break, dinner break, and in the evening.

http://events.uwo.ca/cgi-bin/events.pl?Op=ShowIt&CalendarName=MusicEventsCalendar

Josh tells me that the Percussion Ensemble this Friday 12:30 and 8pm at Paul Davenport Theatre is definitely one to check out. He said, "They tend to add a special piece at the end; I've seen three musicians once holding lighters and once sitting at a wooden door supported like a table. " --- Sweet.

Also:

There's some early/rare opera being performed March 19 & 20, 8pm, in Music Building room 104. I anticipate this being a little more special or theatrical than other voice recitals going on this month.

... and, on a totally random sidenote, did you know that they do screenings of opera performances at Silvercity!?!?!?! wtffff

well, check it out!

THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE
Music and Lyrics by William Finn

_____________________________________________________________________________________
Six young people, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious tale of overachievers' anxiety as it chronicles the experience of six young outsiders trying to win the spelling championship of a lifetime. This hit musical presents an unlikely group of heroes: a quirky yet charming group of students for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.

Mar 25, 26 -- Dance Force presents "Mise En Scene: The Medium is the Message" Dance production

Dance Force is putting on it's annual year end dance production--very exciting stuff.

Here the details:

- When?: March 25, 26 @ 7:00pm
- Where? Althouse Theatre (Google map: 1137 Western Rd)
- How? Tickets are sold at the door, $10 for Students, $15 adults OR in the UCC Atrium (or at Infosource) March 18, 19, 22, and 24th

The theme for this year's show is "Media", which they have cleverly implied on their poster design through a Marshall McLuhan quote and a "Mise En Scene" term-drop, which refers to (if you didn't know) the style, colour, sound, etc that shows up in a particular scene of a film (related to this show how...?). Anyway, I'm sure this will be one performance you do not want to miss. If you've ever seen these guys practice--you'll know what I mean. Awesome stuff.

Also, there will be an after party after the show on Friday, March 26, 2010 to be held at the Ceeps for anyone who wants to "continue the fun".

Mon March 15th: CTO Presents the Aquabats

These guys are awesome. Check out this song, but open it in a new tab, and DO NOT watch the video, because the kid who made it is even more ridiculous than the song itself...
Anyway, they'll be in London on March 15th, which can only be an unreal show. Check out the Facebook group for more info: http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=491515505234

January 21st - 22nd: Single and Sexy!!

Huron's Residence Staff and Sophs invite you to join them for two encore presentations of Single and Sexy, a dynamic and upbeat play about University Life.

Single and Sexy was performed for the first time at Huron College during this past frosh week and was a huge success. It’s a hilarious and oh-too-true exposé about the ins and outs of being a student discovering Canada’s “best student experience”.

If you missed out on the first performance, or just want to find out what everyone has been talking about – you’re in luck!

There will be TWO more performances this January 21st and January 22nd at 8:00 p.m. in Huron V214.

Admission is by donation ($5 suggested) at the door, with proceeds benefiting the Women's Community House of London. “Attend” their Facebook Event for more info and updates.

November 11, 12, 13, 14: Chekov Fest

How long has it been since you've seen live theatre?

The Department of English is putting on a series of plays by Anton Chekhov. They are UNCLE VANYA, THE BEAR, and THE PROPOSAL.

It's a mini festival of plays, including two of Chekov's early farces, The Bear and The Proposal, as well as the tragicomedy, Uncle Vanya. According to their publicity, it features an "outstanding cast of students, faculty, and community members" and is "both hilariously funny and deeply moving". Sounds pretty good to me!

But the BEST part is that this whole she-bang will only cost you TEN DOLLARS (or $15 @ door).

Here's the schedule:

Wednesday, November 11: The Bear and Uncle Vanya

Thursday, November 12; Friday, November 13; and Saturday, November 14: The Proposal and Uncle Vanya

Everything happens at Conron Hall (University College 224), and all shows begin at 8pm.
