If you need some stuff for your new place, or your want to get rid of some stuff... this would be the place to go!!!
The Mayday REALLY REALLY Free Market is being held in Victoria Park (between the statue and the tank?) from 11:30 - 5:00 on May 1st.
According to their Facebook Group: "Skills are absolutely welcome, like music, flame juggling, massages, yoga classes, or something we just havent heard of yet.The options are limitless."
and... "There will be Free food, Free stuff, and most of all alot of fun to be had and the whole community is invited! So bring your friends and energy to take part in a day that doesn't need money, only community and positive energy."
What have you got to lose? (nothing! haha)

July 8 - 11: London Sunfest 2010
If that picture to the left doesn't make you want to check out this highlight-of-the-summer in downtown London, Ontario-- I don't know what will! Maybe...
- hundreds of food vendors selling everything from funnel cakes to Roti, Paella, and wontons
- thousands of handmade, 100% original pieces of arts, crafts, preserves, and representing some of London and area's most talented and unique craftsmen
- over 35 national and international music and dance headliners from around the world
This is London, Ontario's annual TD Canada Trust Sunfest!! This year it is happening July 8th to 11th right downtown in Victoria Park. Entrance is absolutely FREE (food and crafts cost money, obviously), but the music/dance performances happen on the big outdoor stage, and they are all free (and AMAZING!!)
This is the highlight of every summer in London, and surely not a festival to miss!! Check out the website for more details and updates here: http://www.sunfest.on.ca/

April 13 - 18 -- FREE COFFEE @ McDonald's
In response (I can only assume) to Starbuck's April 15th free coffee day, McDonald's is offering FREE COFFEE EVERY DAY, and what I have heard, any size (unlike their normal free coffee giveaways that are only small coffees)!!
Their extra large is approximately a LITRE of coffee, so if you're taking advantage of Weldon's new 24-hour study space possibilities, show your UWO student card and you'll get a whole load of caffeine to last you the night...
* For those who don't know -- the closest Mcdonald's to campus is at Oxford and Wharncliffe (just a 2 minute #2 busride away!)

April 15 -- FREE COFFEE @ Starbucks
Do you live near a starbucks? Though they don't offer this promotion at the now 24-hour Quotes cafe in Weldon library, you can pick up a coffee on your way there from the Richmond or Wharncliffe Starbucks stores. You just need a travel mug!! (and they have some really cute ones there for sale if you're looking to invest!)
Save the planet! (one coffee at a time)

April 11 (tomorrow!) -- Downtown Street Festival - Car Free Sunday!!
Car Free Sunday - Downtown Street Festival !!
Sunday, April 11 is London's first Car Free Sunday!
We're closing Dundas Street from Ridout to Wellington Street and hosting a street festival of free, car-free fun! See the latest cool new cycling gear and EBikes, watch yoga demonstrations and take in all of the other activities.
Car Free Sunday starts at 12:00 noon, with the Opening Ceremony at 1 p.m. on the Main Stage. The fun continues all afternoon until 4 p.m. See you there!
For a full listing of activities, see their website here: http://london.ca/d.aspx?s=/Transportation/car_free_sunday.htm
Take a break from studying!! Check it out!
April 14 -- Sell your textbooks!
The Book Store is starting their 2nd semester textbook buy-back on April 14th!! This is a great way to lighten your load and also make some extra cash right before the summer... They usually take over 50% of the value for themselves, which is quite a bit, but the benefit is that you get your money right away--no waiting around hoping your book will sell, etc. It's the best no-hassle way to sell your books fast.
... that said, the other option is to sell it back to the used book store, and then wait for your cheque, which is usually considerably more money, but you might have to wait a while (andthey keep some of the selling profits as well).
If you want to get the most value, and you don't mind waiting around a bit or putting a little extra effort in... check out amazon.ca Marketplace (you set whatever cost you want and get reimbursed for shipping -- you'll make WAY more than selling it on campus through our stores). OR, try listing it on Kijiji.ca > London, Ontario and selling it to a local, OR, post it on Facebook's marketplace, or even posting some posters around campus if you have some really pricey books you want to get rid of!
Good luck to everyone!! (and if you need any MIT textbooks --> Get in touch!! haha)

March 30 - April 2 -- Jupiter en Famille (a FRENCH play!!!)
Hey everyone, this play is put on by the French department and is TOTALLY IN FRENCH. How exciting... (time to recall all those French Immersion skills!!)
A description of the play:
The gods really are crazy - or maybe they just have spring fever! Imagine Desperate Housewives meets Ovid’s Metamorphosis – a rollicking bedroom comedy where the Roman gods confront infidelity, sibling rivalry, homosexuality, and yoga. All in French - because even the gods know that French is the language of love. Jupiter is forever chasing pretty girls while Juno just wants to take a vacation. Will Orpheus sign a recording deal with Venus? Will Minerva’s vow of chastity stand up to the charms of an Indian god? Come find out at the world premier of a play written, directed and scored by local talent.

March 31 -- Stronger than a Quake of 8.8: A Night of Rick's for Chilean Students
From Facebook:
A night of Rick McGhie's at The Spoke to raise money for Chilean Students affected by the recent earthquake. Entrance is free, donation of any amount is appreciated.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Today, I went to class, I went to the library to study and then I came home to eat dinner. Routine sound familiar? As students, whether we like or not, we know the importance of school and the role education plays in providing us with opportunities for the future and preparing us for whatever the road ahead holds.
Some of you may know that I spent three months as a UN volunteer teaching English in a small Chilean town called Yumbel. Located less than 150 km from the epicentre of the recent Chilean earthquake, the high school where I volunteered has suffered extensive damage and my students are unable to return to their school.
Come out, enjoy the music of Rick McGhie, and help raise some money to rebuild this high school so that these students can return to school and have all of the opportunities in life they deserve.
It's one night of your life to make a lifetime of difference for them.
Thank-you for your support!
"Juntos somos más fuertes que un terremoto de 8.8"
"Together we are stronger than an earthquake of 8.8"
Note: All funds raised will go directly to the Chilean high school in their efforts to make the necessary repairs so that the high school can reopen as soon as possible!
Check out more details on their Facebook Group HERE: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/event.php?eid=102817376423099

DYK Tip: How to Eat on Campus if you're Hungry and Poor
Meals for Three? Huh. Not exactly revolutionary. I've been eating meals for LESS than three for years on campus. I'm not saying that they're nutritious, but they'll satisfy... sort of.
Finding these rare deals has been a combination of behind-the-scenes work experience, trial-and-error, and careful research, and now, for the first time -- we're sharing!!
Here are some ideas if you are super hungry at the library and find yourself counting the quarters at the bottom of your backpack and still coming up short:
What? Toasted bacon sandwich
Where? Tim Horton's, any location that has sandwiches
Cost? ~$1.50, depends on the person who rings it in for some reason
How to Get it: Order this exactly: "A white/brown country bun (pause) toasted (pause) with bacon." They may or may not tell you that it's not possible to order this, because some of the cash registers won't let them ring it in (or they are new and don't know how) BUT, if you complain enough, they usually call the manager and they will ring it in manually. A country bun (if you want that on it's own with butter) should ring in at 89 cents, and if the manager has to type it in, bacon is an extra 50 cents. Then, if you're real adventurous, you can tell the sandwich person when they're making it to put mustard or something on it if you like. You can't order it with lettuce though (i've tried), because then they just charge you for a BLT (no tomato), which is like three bucks.... I discovered this little gem when I did an unfortunate 2-month stunt working there 2 summers ago.
What? Chips and Guac / Chips and fresh Salsa
Where? Burrito place at Nat Sci
Cost? $2.50
How to Get it: Simple, it's on the menu (i think). I like it because they give you a ton of chips, and its delicious and satisfies my hunger cravings unlike something like.. hmm... a muffin would, for example.
What? Bagel with cream cheese / Bagel with cheese and cucumbers / Everything Bagel w. butter
Where? Tim Horton's
Cost? $1.15 - $2.40
How to get it: Again, not really rocket science, these are some of the classic Timmy's offerings. BUT, if you're hungry, and have like a dollar... an everything bagel toasted with butter still gives you the satisfaction of a meal.. even though it isn't really (the onions kind of heat up when its toasted and have a flavour, unlike most things at Tim Horton's...) And, if you feel like a sammy, but can't afford it? Toasted sesame Bagel with garlic cheese and cucumber: you've got crunchy freshness of cukes, with the garlic flavour.... it's kind of satisfying?
What? Fries, Rice, Noodles, Potatoes, side dishes of all kinds of exciting variety
Where? Any campus residence (ideally Delaware because it's central)
Cost? THE BEST DEAL: ~$1.00 for a huge plate
How to get it: the actual challenge (if you don't live in residence) is getting in. Yes, ideally you have a friend who lives there and they sign you in as a guest, and sometimes I've told front desk staff I'm just using the caf and they let me in... but otherwise... use your imagination. The actual COST of everything if you don't have the Rez meal plan is pretty much double what kids in Rez pay, so most things are expensive... BUT, some things aren't. With a meal plan, a big plate of fries is 60 cents... without, it's $1.20 (still a deal). The same goes for most starch-based side dishes (as listed above). You just order them "to go", and order them alone, and they usually just fill the whole plate (aka: big enough for lunch). Ice cream is also cheap, if you feel so inclined. There might be other stuff, I just haven't lived in rez in a while, and don't really remember... ** Coffee is also $1.00 or less**
What? Toast, classic 2-eggs breakfast, grilled cheese, hamburger (by itself), and... a lot more
Where? The Grad Club
Cost? Under five bucks, (grilled cheese is particularly satisfying/cheap)
How to Get it: The hardest part is actually discovering this place or actually physically finding it. It is in the basement of Middlesex College. Just go down the stairs to the bottom level and walk down the hallway, it's kind of in the middle of the building-ish. It has signs posted all over the doors saying you need to be a member, etc etc... but you definitely don't. The MAIN draw about this place (for me) is that you can pay with credit card, so if you forget money entirely one day -- you're not screwed! (but you have to spend over $4 to use debit/credit)
... plus I'm sure a lot more hidden treasures! If you guys know of a cheap place/item that I haven't posted here -- shoot us an email (publications@usc-uwo.org) about it and we'll post it for all to see (on here!) !!!

Mar 22nd -- USC Commissioner and Coordinator Apps Due
I know, I know, it has been your secret hope and dream to one day grow up and write posts for The Western Web... well fear not! Because now is your chance...
Applications for USC Commissioner and Coordinator positions are now available!!
Additionally, nominations for USC Speaker are also open!
Obviously there are a bunch of positions (other than the posisiton of Publications Commissioner aka USC blogger), and some of the exciting spots include Envirowestern Coordinator, USC Internal Promotions Commissioner, Clubs Finance Coordinator, Charity Ball Coodinator, First Year Students' Commissioner... and SO many more!!! Check out the USC website for further details of what positions are open and their descriptions at http://www.usc.uwo.ca/commissions.asp
#1 Rule: DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED. I didn't apply in first year because I thought that there would be SO many more qualified candidates than me, but honestly? Sometimes there are positions for which we don't even get a single app.... seriously! If you are interested, enthusiastic, dependable, and want to get some actual experience in anything from business (check out the finance portfolios) to television (check out the communications portfolio, specifically media)--now's your chance!! Each role is what you make of it, and if you're dedicated, most positions could turn out more fulfilling and better learning experience than any internship you'll ever find.... so SERIOUSLY--- APPLY!!
To apply, please pick up your application at the USC Front Desk located on the third floor of the UCC or print off an application from our website http://www.usc.uwo.ca
Applications are due on March 22, 2010 by 4pm to the USC Front Desk. FOUR O'CLOCK. I know it's silly, but don't miss the time deadline!!

DYK: FREE concerts on campus, who knew?
Hey everyone,
THE BEATLES ARE COMING TO PLAY A FREE CONCERT AT WESTERN!!!!!!
... just kidding, they're mostly not alive, BUT I just got this great tip from Josh (and it's almost as good)...
Apparently the faculty of music has an online events calendar where they post ALL of their events... so if you enjoy music at all--it's the place to be. Some of the city's (maybe even country? dare I say, world?'s) most talented musicians put on daily performances RIGHT ON CAMPUS. Check it out between class... after class... it's awesome! And apparently the last month of the academic year is their busiest time.
So, here's the DL:
Choose from 3+ recitals daily, free and conveniently on campus during your lunch break, dinner break, and in the evening.
http://events.uwo.ca/cgi-bin/events.pl?Op=ShowIt&CalendarName=MusicEventsCalendar
Josh tells me that the Percussion Ensemble this Friday 12:30 and 8pm at Paul Davenport Theatre is definitely one to check out. He said, "They tend to add a special piece at the end; I've seen three musicians once holding lighters and once sitting at a wooden door supported like a table. " --- Sweet.
Also:
There's some early/rare opera being performed March 19 & 20, 8pm, in Music Building room 104. I anticipate this being a little more special or theatrical than other voice recitals going on this month.
... and, on a totally random sidenote, did you know that they do screenings of opera performances at Silvercity!?!?!?! wtffff
well, check it out!

DYK Tip: The ULIMATE KEY to Picking Classes at Western
In choosing my courses I came across this AMAZINGGGG site that the university should clearly tell people about (but I've never heard about it before....). So, here it is, the USC working for the students --> This will save your life (or your GPA?).
Its like a legit ratemyprofessor.com, essentially, the online postings of those course evaluations we do at the end of every class. It has every prof and course taught since the evaluations started (1994?).

If you have to choose between 2 sections, its helpful in selecting a good prof... and also I've been choosing a lot of electives based on prof scores, but course scores are too difficult to find now that the university changed the numbering system recently, but it is stilll possible if you're willing to put in the effort
Oh! also look for % of class attended (it will show you if the course has mandatory attendance/participation or not) and expected grade (lots of high expectations will tell you that this is likely an easy course to get high marks in)

Good luck to everyone, and I hope this helps somebody... it sure helped me! (I wish I knew about it in first year!!!)

Mar 13 -- 5th Annual London Indie Media Fair
Apparently the London Public Libraries host a pretty hefty series of events weekly, and this happens to be one of them! For more details on their other events, you can access the online calendar HERE, you can also filter by location based on whereabouts in London you live: Masonville Branch, Central Branch (downtown at Galleria), and Cherrryhill (on Oxford) are some helpful suggestions!
Anyway, I used to work on one of London's Indie Media zines, and those guys were always really excited about this event, so I thought I'd share it with you if anyone's interested... As a university town, there are a lot of very talented individuals and activists who live here, many of whom have been really integral to the social justice scene in Canada in the past few years. This event is dedicated to bringing those individuals and groups together to one place, so they can share ideas with eachother and with newcomers (you, maybe!), and hopefully spread the word about their media productions...
From the website:
The Indie Media Fair is an event to promote the creation and distribution of independently produced media. Artists, writers, musicians, and publishers will gather to show, sell and trade their ideas.
Workshops:
DIY Event Planning and Organizing at 12 pm.
Kane X. Faucher presents Scholartist at 1 pm.
Iconoclast presents Intellectual Self Defense at 2 pm.
Brian Frank presents the Convergence of Social and Independent Media at 3 pm.
Indie Press is Free Press!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This event will be held at the London Library: Central Branch, in the 1st floor passageway from 12PM to 4PM on Saturday MArch 13th.
It's open to everyone, and if you're interested in a booth for yourself/your group, please contact: indie.media@lpl.london.on.ca

Mar 8-13: UWO Bookstore Sale
I'm not sure if everyone gets these bookstore e-mails or not, but the sales are often pretty good.
This posting seems somewhat ambiguous, but I see a lot of RED tags, which usually mean Chapters-esque clearance of 50-90% off...! It's a great opportunity to get some advance gifts for parents for Father's/Mother's day ie: cook books, coffee table books, books by their favourite authors, etc etc -- and they don't need to know you got them on mega sale!!!

Mar 25, 26 -- Dance Force presents "Mise En Scene: The Medium is the Message" Dance production
Dance Force is putting on it's annual year end dance production--very exciting stuff.
Here the details:
- When?: March 25, 26 @ 7:00pm
- Where? Althouse Theatre (Google map: 1137 Western Rd)
- How? Tickets are sold at the door, $10 for Students, $15 adults OR in the UCC Atrium (or at Infosource) March 18, 19, 22, and 24th
The theme for this year's show is "Media", which they have cleverly implied on their poster design through a Marshall McLuhan quote and a "Mise En Scene" term-drop, which refers to (if you didn't know) the style, colour, sound, etc that shows up in a particular scene of a film (related to this show how...?). Anyway, I'm sure this will be one performance you do not want to miss. If you've ever seen these guys practice--you'll know what I mean. Awesome stuff.
Also, there will be an after party after the show on Friday, March 26, 2010 to be held at the Ceeps for anyone who wants to "continue the fun".
Check out their Facebook event here: http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/event.php?eid=10150106332470387

Mar 18th: MIT Formal!
The ONLY event this season where you can re-live the high of attending high school prom while still being considered a hipster ... the MIT formal!
WHere? The Delta Armouries (still not really sure where that is....)
When? March 18th, 9PM
HOW? Tickets $15 at Infosource
Not really sure why the creator decided on a picture of a ramshackle orange tent on UC hill for the Facebook Event page... then again, no one's really sure what they actually learn in MIT anyway, so it probably makes sense to them somehow??
Anyway, if you happened to go to the MIT Inappropriate Office party, you'll know how bitchin' this faculty's events can be, and if not? Well, now's your chance.
Somehow they've managed to swing this as an ALL-AGES event (yay!), so everyone's welcome!
Check out the Facebook event for more details: http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=386225909528
Or, go to Infosource for tickets starting tomorrow!!

Thurs March 4th: Mobilize March -- back in London!
Jeff Preston is a phenomenally inspirational MIT grad who set off on.. well, I'll let his site explain:
On May 5th 2008, Jeff Preston set off in his electric wheelchair from the steps of City Hall on a 650km marathon across the province to raise awareness about the lack of accessible transportation in Ontario. Accomplishing his mission 42 days later, Jeff stated upon arriving in Ottawa that "This may be the end of the March, but it is just the beginning of the journey."
From the beginning, the March has been about more than just accessibility for the disabled. The Mobilize March is about getting people moving, mobilizing within our community to make it sustainable and inclusive for everyone. Spending the last two years working both locally and provincially to improve accessible transportation, it is now time for Jeff to help make London inclusive for everyone, regardless of age, gender, race, faith or ability.
On March 4th 2010 at 1pm, Jeff will return to the place it all began, the front steps of City Hall, to make an important announcement about the next step in his journey. Please come out and celebrate this exciting news with Jeff and his supporters!
Together, we can get people moving.
Check out the Facebook group for more info: http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=360042297348 . If you haven't heard him speak before, get ready, because it may change your life...

Mon March 15th: CTO Presents the Aquabats
These guys are awesome. Check out this song, but open it in a new tab, and DO NOT watch the video, because the kid who made it is even more ridiculous than the song itself...
Anyway, they'll be in London on March 15th, which can only be an unreal show. Check out the Facebook group for more info: http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=491515505234
DYK Tip: You could be famous!!
Talking. Music. Pop Culture. Current Events. Celebrities. Sports. Western. Songwriting. Journalism. Movies. Photography. Filmmaking. A successful career ahead of you...
If any of those things interest you at all, then you may be surprised to find out that the USC has ongoing training to support you, a Western student, in becoming a DJ, a news reporter, a journalist, a sports commentator, a photographer, a camera person, an interviewer, an editior, or one of a thousand different positions while you're at school through TV Western, CHRW or the Gazette.
CHRW TRAINING
They actually offer a fairly advanced training program, but also probably offer the most opportunites for involvement, since they require literally hundreds of volunteers to keep them on the air 24/7. I personally did a couple of "sessions" learning about recording, interviewing, and even turn table mixing with one of their night-time live-to-air-style DJs. They are always in need of new talent. Here are a couple of postings from their site, which give you an idea of the diversity of positions available, apparently they also offer internship credits!:
- Become a show host...
- Become a newscaster, host a talk show or broadcast live sports...
- Help find new music, new talent, and get into the world of marketing and advertising...
-
... or check out their website right now to out more about what 94.9 CHRW Volunteers do!

TVWESTERN.CA TRAINING
Get involved with tvWestern and Rogers or one of the other shows!
Session 1: Intro to tvWestern.ca dates are available at tvWestern.ca studios - Room 266 UCC or e-mail kim@tvwestern.ca

THE GAZETTE
The GAzette is always looking for contibutors. I was a news intern for a couple weeks a few years ago and got published TWICE. It's pretty cool seeing your name in print, trust me. They need people for sports, arts, news, and even comics, so find your fit by shooting them an email or something...
From their website:
Visit us anytime in Room 263 in the University Community Centre and we will happily show you the ins and outs of working at The Gazette. The time commitment is up to you. If you’re burdened down with school work or have other commitments, no one will pressure you to pick up assignments; there is no “contribution quota.”

FACULTY PUBLICATIONS
Most faculties have publications. I, for example, am in MIT, and I have contributed a few times to the MIT Zine, which was literally as simple as emailing the editor (I got their email from the MITSC website, which I Googled) and sending something in. No time limits, restrictions or whatever scary nonsense. My roommate's in engineering, and (talk about lack of constraints and censorship!) they have an awesome paper called the Purple Arm which is absolutely hilarious.
If you want to know more about your own faculty's publication, Google it!! (Google knows all). Or, drop me a line at publications@usc-uwo.org and I'll try to dig up some more info for you...

Fri March 5th: Choose your Own Adventure Apps Due
Early Outreach at Western and the CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE CONFERENCE (CYOA) Students decide their future educational pathways at an early age.
In Ontario, approximately three-fourths of all students make the decision to attend university before age 15; one-third decide before they turn nine years old.
In order to help encourage young individuals to attend post-secondary education, the University Students’ Council and the University of Western Ontario are embarking on our fourth annual leadership conference for Grade 8 students in the City of London to help facilitate access to resources and information about attending college, university or the skilled trades.
In addition to targeting students who are already leaders in their schools and community, volunteers will be reaching out to groups who are traditionally under-represented in post-secondary education, namely Aboriginal, first-generation Canadian, and low-income students.
This project requires the leadership and passion of young leaders in the Western community.
Both executives, who will help plan the conference, and leadership developers, who will facilitate the conference itself, are needed. Executive responsibilities range from grade 8 student recruitment to programming and fundraising. Leadership developers will act as conference facilitators.
Applications:
Application for Executive Positions
Application for Leadership Developers
The applications are due by Friday, March 5, 2010 at 4:00 pm to the USC Front Desk, Rm. 340 UCC. Successful candidates will be contacted for an interview.
Please contact the Early Outreach Commissioner, Nicola Goldberg, or Internal Affairs Coordinator, Andrew Beach, with any further questions.

January 21st - 22nd: Single and Sexy!!
Huron's Residence Staff and Sophs invite you to join them for two encore presentations of Single and Sexy, a dynamic and upbeat play about University Life.
Single and Sexy was performed for the first time at Huron College during this past frosh week and was a huge success. It’s a hilarious and oh-too-true exposé about the ins and outs of being a student discovering Canada’s “best student experience”.
If you missed out on the first performance, or just want to find out what everyone has been talking about – you’re in luck!
There will be TWO more performances this January 21st and January 22nd at 8:00 p.m. in Huron V214.
Admission is by donation ($5 suggested) at the door, with proceeds benefiting the Women's Community House of London. “Attend” their Facebook Event for more info and updates.

wweb D.Y.K. tip: Free Skating!!!
Free Skate – all day, every day and night!!!!
All bundled up and no place to go? You better have a pair of skates with you! Whether it’s a romantic evening, or a fieldtrip with your floormates, London’s outdoor skating rinks are a wonderful winter destination, better yet, they’re FREE!
The closest to campus is Victoria Park (right along Richmond Row, in the centre of town). The yearly tradition of ice skating in Victoria Park dates back to 1913 when the first lighted, outdoor skating rink was constructed. They’re officially open until 10 PM each night, and only close for a re-icing between 5:30 and 6:30 each day. Click HERE for more info.
The Covent Garden Market rink is most people I know’s preferred rink, but it’s a little farther. Just follow Talbot alllllll the way down to the John Labatt Centre. It says on their Website that it’s only open until 7 PM, but it’s not barred for access after that (all night long!!)
If you don’t have a pair of skates (I didn’t before a couple of weeks ago!!), check out the Oxford St. Goodwill store or, for better luck and a little more money, the Sports Store beside it. Just take the 4 or 17 bus towards Fanshawe, and you’ll see it on your right side (in the plaza with the Tim Horton’s).
Good luck and happy skating!!
